Navotas resident tests negative for meningococcemia

A nine-year-old resident of Barangay Navotas West tested negative for meningoccocemia.

Tests showed that the nine-year-old student suffered from acute glomerulonephritis, a severe kidney infection, which has symptoms similar to that of meningococcemia, the local government said in a statement released Friday.

“Tinitiyak po namin na walang banta ng meningoccocemia sa ating mga barangay o lungsod (We are ensuring that there is no threat of meningoccocemia in our barangays or city),” the statement read.

“Hinihikayat po namin ang lahat na magkaroon o ipagpatuloy ang healthy habits para mapalakas ang resistensya sa anumang sakit (We are encouraging everyone to adopt or continue making healthy habits to strengthen the body’s resistance against any illness),” it added.

The boy, who was then suffering from a high-grade fever, hematuria, and facial edema, was brought to the Navotas City Hospital on September 9.

After his medications did not work and after seeing that he tested negative for dengue, he was admitted to the Tondo Medical Center.

There, the boy had seizures, difficulty breathing, change in sensorium, hydrophobia, and purple rashes all over his body.

More tests were conducted, where it was determined that the boy was not a carrier of the Neisseria meningitides bacteria, which causes the meningococcemia infection.
