Navotas Mayor Tobias “Toby” Tiangco said the city continues to gain ground in the fight against Covid-19 as its positivity rate fell to 5 percen from as high as 54 percent in May, according to a report by Manila Times.

It also logged 920 new cases from August 2-8, a week after the city imposed a 14-day lockdown and started conducting massive community testing.

“Let those harrowing weeks serve as our lesson and warning. Lives are at stake. We cannot let our guard down,” Tiangco said.

The City Health Office recorded only 72 new cases out of 1,458 tests conducted from September 27 to October 3, 2020.

“A low positivity rate suggests that there are fewer people in Navotas getting infected with the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). Out of 100 tested, only five turned out positive,” the mayor said.

He stressed the need to continue the strategy of intensified community testing, contact tracing and isolation and treatment.

“We should aim to reach and sustain a three percent positivity rate for two weeks,” Tiangco said. “The local government is thanking everyone, all sectors from barangays to the business community and homeowners, for the declining Covid-19 cases in the city.”

“While we are relieved that our Covid situation is not as dire as before, we should continue to be careful and vigilant. Our numbers could still skyrocket any time, especially if we disregard safety measures,” he added.
