PhilHealth-Red Cross dispute may increase virus cases

account_balanceNavotas chat_bubble_outline0 Comments

Navotas City Mayor Toby Tiangco Wednesday expressed fear the impasse between PhilHealth and the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) could contribute to a surge in cases of coronavirus disease.

"The issue has severely affected our testing capacity. With limited testing, our COVID cases could shoot up and we could lose all the gains we have achieved so far," Tiangco lamented.

"PRC testing in Navotas stopped on October 14. A week prior, our average daily testing capacity was 162. It dropped by 51% to 84 this week.," he said.

Tiangco stressed the importance of mass testing in curbing the increase of COVID cases.

"Last July, we reached 23% positivity rate after we ramped up our testing to 500 a day. This enabled us to give immediate medical attention to the affected residents and prevent further transmission of the virus," he noted.

"Mass testing, coupled with intensive contact tracing, isolation or treatment, is crucial in our fight against COVID-19. We hope for a speedy resolution to the PhilHealth-PRC issue so we could once again be all out in our efforts to end this pandemic," he said.

As of October 20, Navotas has tested 36,358 individuals or 13.6% of its population.
